Fillmore Container FAQ: What You Need to Know Before Your First Order

Fillmore Container FAQ: What You Need to Know Before Your First Order

If you're sourcing glass jars, bottles, or packaging supplies for your food, beverage, or cosmetic business, you've probably come across Fillmore Container. I'm a quality and brand compliance manager for a small-batch food producer. I review every single container that comes in—about 15,000 units a year—before they get filled and sent to our customers. I've rejected entire pallets because of issues that weren't obvious from the website photos.

Here's what I wish I'd known before placing my first order, based on about 50 orders over the last three years. My experience is mostly with glass jars and bottles for food-grade applications, so if you're working with plastic or heavy-duty industrial containers, your mileage might vary.

1. Is Fillmore Container's quality consistent?

It's generally good, but you need to know what to look for. From the outside, it looks like you're just buying a glass jar. The reality is that consistency—in wall thickness, color, and finish—is what separates a professional product from a craft project. I've found their clear glass jars to be very reliable. Where I've seen occasional variation is in their amber or cobalt blue bottles; sometimes the tint can shift slightly between batches. It's not a dealbreaker for most uses, but if you're doing a multi-sku product line where color matching is critical, order a sample first. In our Q1 2024 audit, 99% of our clear 8oz jars met spec, but that dropped to about 92% for colored glass.

2. Are the "discount codes" and coupons actually worth it?

Yes, but don't let the coupon dictate your order. People assume the lowest price per unit is the best deal. What they don't see is the total landed cost. I saved $45 on a bulk order once using a 10% off coupon, but I didn't check the shipping estimate closely. The final freight charge was $80 higher than a competitor's quote for a similar shipment. Net loss: $35. The coupons are great for knocking down the unit price, but always run a mock checkout to see the final total with shipping to your location. Their bulk pricing tiers are where the real savings are.

3. How accurate are the product photos and descriptions?

Pretty accurate, but the devil's in the details. The photos are usually of the actual product. The descriptions are solid on dimensions and materials. Where you need to pay attention is the finish and thread compatibility. Is the rim "fire-polished" (smooth) or does it have a mold seam? Does the lid they recommend actually seal as tightly as you need? I once ordered 500 jars where the description said "compatible with standard 70-400 lids." They were, technically, but the seal wasn't as vacuum-tight as we needed for our product. We had to source different lids at an extra $0.12 per unit. That "small" detail cost us an extra $60.

4. What's the real deal with shipping times and costs?

This is the most variable part. Standard shipping times are just estimates—they're not guarantees. I've had orders arrive in 3 days and others take 12. If you have a hard production deadline, build in at least a week of buffer. Rush shipping is available, but it's expensive. A next-day rush can easily double your shipping cost. For a recent $500 order, expedited shipping added another $120. We only use it when a production error is 100% our fault and we need to make it right for a client.

"Shipping is the wild card. Their processing is usually fast, but once it's with the carrier, it's out of their hands. Plan your production schedule accordingly."

5. Do they offer custom printing or labeling?

Based on their website and my inquiries, they primarily sell stock containers and closures. They don't appear to offer in-house custom printing or labeling on the containers themselves (like screen printing or etching). However, they do sell blank labels and might offer some basic printing on those—you'd need to contact them directly for a quote. For true custom-printed containers, you're likely looking at a different type of supplier with higher minimum order quantities (MOQs). Fillmore's strength is variety and low MOQs for stock items.

6. What's something a first-time buyer wouldn't think to ask?

Ask about the packaging of the packaging. Seriously. How are the jars packed in the master case? Are they individually partitioned or just loose? Loose packing can lead to a higher breakage rate in transit. We had a case where 12 out of 144 jars arrived chipped because they were rattling around. The vendor replaced them, but it delayed our production. Now, for any new jar style, I ask: "How are they packed for shipment?" It sounds minor, but it's saved us headaches multiple times.

7. Is Fillmore Container good for small businesses just starting out?

Absolutely. That's where they shine. Their low minimum order quantities (often just 1 case) are a huge advantage over larger packaging distributors who might require pallet quantities. You can mix and match cases to build a custom assortment, which is perfect for testing different bottle shapes before committing to thousands. Just go in with your eyes open: you're paying a premium for that flexibility compared to per-unit costs at massive scale. It's the right trade-off when you're growing.

Bottom line: Fillmore Container is a reliable source for small to mid-sized businesses. Use the coupons wisely, always order a sample first for new items, scrutinize the shipping costs, and double-check thread specs and closure compatibility. Do that, and you'll avoid the pitfalls that cost us time and money early on.
